Projectics 2nd call for papers
What Projectics can facing the crisis ?
jeudi 19 mars 2009 , Sandrine Beaujon

CALL FOR PAPERS

The European Society of Projectics was formed fourteen years ago and has consistently promoted the need for a holistic model of organisational behaviour, leadership and management and wider social responsibility and sustainability. That call was a lone voice amongst many organisations rushing for double-digit growth, exponential expansion, high volume and low cost manufacturing and increase in credit-based consumption.

As a result today society is in deep crisis and it is no longer limited to the West, but the whole world. Large developing countries, which embraced the logic of the Western Growth model, are also in crisis. They were already doing "better" than their fellow countries by following this logic and producing more and more at cheaper and cheaper rates thus accentuating all the values on which the logic was based.

This model, based increasingly on finance and following the "the more, the better" principle has become unsustainable. If substantive and fundamental changes are not achieved in the socio-economic organizations and their world-level regulation, then it is very probable that the current crisis will be followed by many others leading to social and economic chaos, instability, misery and ecological disaster for all. We must invent concrete solutions that will work for tomorrow’s world. It is necessary to engage in responsible innovation at every level of accountability. That means innovation must lead to a logic that is different to pure competition and measurements that focus on growth & profit and which ignore the human dimension. Innovation should also be along organisational and social lines and not simply on technical and economic dimensions. Company performance must show its contribution to people and citizens.

Projectics, as it was conceived, was set up to focus minds on these dimensions and to consider them as a significant part of a project to be managed.

For this purpose, Marcel Mauss’s "giftcounter gift" human society principle should be considered as central to all human activity. A society (people, entities and their interactions) that considers what it "gives" as only a means to generate maximum returns is basically irresponsible and cannot be sustained. The reorientation must be based on everyone’s mental models and day to day activities. It is the responsibility of each and everyone to systemically integrate initiatives and solidarity values. All projects should be underpinned (for some it will be the objective) by these principles with consistent interactions between the two.

The theoretical work of Edgar Morin on complexity, emergence and eco-selfreorganization leads to the understanding of social dynamics as "Brownian" movements rather than planned strategies to be implemented and controlled from the top. We think it is necessary to understand these movements as a ’whole’ of shocks generated by micro-decisions and strategies adapting in a constantly changing process whose result is difficult to conceptualize or predict. Bottom-up and transverse operations must be regarded as central to the appreciation of the social dynamics using bottom-up and self-organizing models. This is why entrepreneurial initiatives, in the broadest sense of the terms of creation, innovation and development of networks, are indispensable and should be integrated with concern for social impact. The development of social networks/ and initiatives related to cooperatives need to incorporate social cohesion and responsibility.

The challenge is enormous, but we should start now. Experiments which produce beneficial results must be followed up and models for the construction of a sustainable future must be invented from practice.

This year’s Conference of Projectics would like to invite ideas and initiatives for the construction of a society of responsible innovation. It seems to us that this is the only way to help create a future that does not lead to social catastrophe and disaster.
