ELU-ULS 2006 - Ultimate limit states of geotechnical structures
46033 - 23-25 August 2006 Marne-la-Vallée, France
Friday 11 November 2005 , Bernard Gambini, Emmanuel Carrier, Françoise Bourgain, Jean-Olivier Laval

Jointly organised by École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées & Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées

Symposium Aims

The stability analysis of geotechnical structures is an old and general concern for geotechnical engineers. Many researches were devoted to this question during the last thirty to forty years, in order to improve the reliability of the design: numerical research, to benefit from the developments of the finite element method, experimental research on full-scale or small-scale models, development of new testing devices to determine the parameters of the calculation models, etc. The symposium will gather researchers and engineers who work on this subject to compare their results, to draw some consequences for the evolution of the practices and the standards, to discuss the needs for further research and more generally to exchange information and ideas on this subject

Symposium Topics

The topics of the symposium all relate to the behaviour of soils and rocks at failure, to the laboratory and in situ tests used to determine the design parameters and to the methods of calculation of various types of geotechnical structures, with a glance on the current design standards. The symposium will cover the following subjects:
- theoretical and numerical developments,
- laboratory and in situ tests to determine the parameters of the design methods,
- experiments on structures and on models (full-size, half-size, small-scale, centrifuged models),
- applications to geotechnical structures (foundations, retaining structures, tunnels, slopes, reinforced ground structures...) and examples of construction sites or projects,
- design rules based on ultimate limit states.

Scientific programme

The Symposium will include state of the art lectures, sessions with oral presentations and discussions and poster sessions.

Language

The official languages of the Symposium are French and English. Simultaneous translation will be available.

Call for abstracts and papers

Papers on any topic relevant to the Symposium themes are welcome. One page abstracts in English or in French should be sent to the Symposium Secretariat. Contributed papers will be selected by the Scientific Committee on the basis of these abstracts. The abstract should include the title of the paper, author’s names, mailing address, e-mail address, telephone and facsimile numbers. The abstract should clearly state the purpose and the conclusions of the full paper. Detailed instructions will be sent to the authors of the selected abstracts. The final paper will be checked by the Scientific Committee.

Important dates

- Deadline for abstracts: January 31, 2006
- Acceptance of abstracts: February 15, 2006
- Deadline for submission of papers: May 31, 2006

Symposium Proceedings

All papers accepted for presentation will be published in the Symposium proceedings, which will be available during the Symposium.

Location

The Symposium will be held at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, Marne-la-Vallée, near Paris. Numerous hotels of all categories are available in Paris and Marne-la-Vallée.
