CALL FOR PAPERS transmitted by Knowllence
XIV. TH CONFERENCE ON PROJECTICS
Innovation, complexity and competences
vendredi 27 juin 2008 , Sandrine Beaujon

Innovation is currently the source of any consistent entrepreneurial dynamics. Our times generate worldwide hypercompetition which impacts the protagonists in emerging countries as well as in developed regions where a worseningof the already existing deep crisis is to be expected in the short term. "Redevelopment" ways and means must definitely be invented. The term "innovation" covers a very wide and complex field. In this conference, our goal will be to reach better understanding of what is at stakes with with specific regard to sociology, organisation, information, communication, cognition, etc. The ability of firms, organisations and territories to get positively involved in such "movements" linked to innovation constitutes one of the major focuses of this conference. "Movement", a notion mentioned just above, must be considered as a key field to be deepened . The main underlying idea is that the dynamics that firms, organisations and territories are submitted to, hold a large number of elements that are out of the control of the persons who are supposed to have control on them, or claim to have. This may account for the reduced efficiency and little relevance of the actions and interventions aimed at what is known as the "supporting of change". More in-depth comprehesion of the transformation processes is needed. This requires to transform the conceptualizing mode which most researchers and experts use to build their representations. Such a conceptualization largely relies on the concepts of (homeo)-stability, planned and controlled change (seen as the transition between two stable states. There is a dramatic need for conceptualizing processes that open up on chaos, network phenomena, that is to say on complexity and therefore on the limits of rational control over such change processes. Together with this reflexion, the role of eco-self-organization in these evolutions must also be considered. And further to the need for relevant definitions, the implementation and evaluation of renovated intervention modes to support such change processes must therefore be taken as objects for research. Our conference will also address these questions.

Lastly, smartly moving around and intervening in such environments obviously requires working on cognitive aspects, namely the aspects related to the attitudes of the concerned actors, particularly in relation with their motivation and emotional intelligence. In the like manner, the development of specific skills and competences for the managers and project leaders as well as for all the other actors in the organization, must be regarded as a central issue. These competences relate to technical aspects (linked to concrete technical tasks), but also behavioural aspects (how to act ?) and meta-cognitive aspects (how to conceptualize/ understand/learn ?). How to identify such skills, competences and attitudes, how can they be developed, acquired, learnt and transferred in situations and environments prone to movement. The project made is often regarded as the best way for performing complex collective transformations in complex and turbulent environments. Yet, the project mode can be considered according to different points of view : "rationalistic planning ", considering the project mode as a kind of "mechanical sequencing" capable of leading to a result previously planned, through a calculated and controlled progress, as opposed to a mode where the project is considered as an endeavour that polarzes energies towards a common goal to be reached through a collective action which is designed, developed and assumed jointly (, from beginning to end. Which one of these conceptions -and respective implementations- is the more suitable to the turbulent and complex environments we are concerned with, that require innovation and change at the same time as they hold them tightly. This is another topic of our conference. The question of the support of such complex transformation processes (complex projects, transformations, learning, etc.) and of the people who deal with them (managers, consultants, project leaders, tutors, etc.) is also an extremely important issue, among the various questions that we shall discuss. This is the last topic of this year’s Projectics conference.
