"Sustainable Design of Industrial Systems"
mardi 2 novembre 2010 , Sandrine Beaujon

We invite you to submit papers for a special session we organize on

"Sustainable Design of Industrial Systems"

as a part of IDETC 2011 (International Design Engineering Technical Conferences) http://www.asmeconferences.org/IDETC2011/and especially 37th DAC Design Automation Conference that will be held during August 28 - 31, 2011 in Washington DC http://cdl.engr.uconn.edu/asmeda/index.html

Call for papers is available at

http://cdl.engr.uconn.edu/asmeda/sessions.html#sdis

Important dates :

February 11, 2011 for abstract submission (mandatory)

February 18, 2011 for the full papers submission.

To submit a paper, follow the instructions at

http://www.asmeconferences.org/idetc2011/ and send also a copy to bernard.yannou (at) ecp.fr

The sustainable design of products and services is become a major concern of companies. Design departments are now accustomed to consider by advance the whole lifecycle of a product to develop in terms of environmental, social and economical impacts. But Life Cycle Analysis practices have well highlighted that it is not that trivial to lower environmental impacts of a product since it is also easy to degrade at the same time other properties of sustainability in the production plant perimeter, in the supply chain system or in the user habits ecosystem. Sustainable design appeals to model design issues in a more systemic way, requestioning several times which perimeter of study and which functional (or service) unit are the most relevant for comparing environmental, social and economical properties.

The ASME Design Automation Committee and the Session Organizers invite papers focused on sustainable deign (modeling, simulating, optimizing, evaluating, deciding) in a more systemic way out of the perimeter traditionally devoted to the sole design process.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to :

- Ecodesign of complex systems (ecodesigning subsystems and the whole system)

- Defining functional (or service) units and perimeter of study for considering sustainability properties

- Functional sales and sustainability of new business models

- Including externality cost models into value chains

- Integrating more recycled materials into bills of materials

- Concurrent optimization of product architecture and supply scenarios (supplier selection and logistics)

- Industrial ecology (locally reusing waste materials as design constraints)

- Influence of the green purchasing in the design activity

- Influence of environmental regulations in the company offer portfolio

- Adaptation of the industrial system, offer and communication to the increasing consumer awareness of sustainable issues

- Better modeling user/consumer behaviors along the product lifecycle for better predicting energy consumption, product maintenance, product renewal (product life duration) and, consequently, environmental impacts

This session is not limited to mechanical or mechatronical products but also open to any categories of product-services such as : buildings, agrifood, packaging, home appliances, electronics.
